About the Misophonia Awareness Experiment

Understanding Misophonia: A Global Effort
Misophonia is a neurological condition affecting up to 18% of the population, causing a heightened sensitivity to certain everyday sounds. These sounds can range from high-pitched noises, clicks, and pops to chewing, tapping, and particularly sibilant "s" sounds—those sharp, hissing noises often found in speech. For those living with Misophonia, these sounds can trigger intense emotional reactions, such as discomfort, anxiety, or even anger.
Our Mission: Raising Awareness Through Real Conversations
The Misophonia Awareness Experiment is a global initiative designed to raise awareness and deepen public understanding of this condition. By conducting street interviews with people worldwide, we aim to discover how familiar the general public is with Misophonia and how they react when confronted with the concept, especially in relation to sounds like the distinct whistle or harsh "s" in speech.
Why Focus on Sibilant Sounds?
Sibilant sounds—those characterized by a sharp, high-frequency "s"—are often a common trigger for people with Misophonia. By focusing on this specific sound, we hope to bring attention to the varied triggers that can affect individuals with the condition and to highlight the importance of empathy and awareness.
How We’re Conducting This Research
Our approach is simple yet impactful: we’re engaging directly with people on the streets, asking them if they are familiar with Misophonia, and observing their reactions to the discussion of their own speech sounds. We document these interactions (with consent) to gather insights into public awareness and attitudes.
Your Participation Matters
By taking part in this experiment—whether as an interviewer or a participant—you contribute to a broader understanding of Misophonia and help build empathy for those who experience it daily. Together, we can foster a more inclusive environment where people are more aware of the invisible challenges that others face.
